Final devoicing of IV in Reykjavik Icelandic

چکیده

Icelandic has a phonological process which devoices sonorants after voioed segments in domain-final position, but to date the category of the relevant domain and potential further factors affecting it have not been identified. The present paper studies final devoicing of IV, by which IV is realized as the voiceless lateral fricative [f] in domain-final position. It reports on the results of an experimental reading study designed to test the exact environments of this process and the irnplications for a prosodic hierarchy for Icelandic. The results suggest that devoicing of IV is bound by the prosodic utterance. All instances of IV were devoioed in utterance fmal position. Within the utterance, final devoicing is optional, but the frequency of its application reflects the syntactic and prosodic hierarchy such that it is most frequent at a clause/an IPboundary, significantly Jess frequent at a syntactic XP-edge and it almost never occurs within a syntactic XP.

A strong heritability of psoriatic arthritis over four generations--the Reykjavik Psoriatic Arthritis Study.

OBJECTIVE We have studied the prevalence of PsA in Reykjavik, Iceland, in a population-based cohort, and using the Icelandic genealogy database we have estimated the risk ratio (RR) spanning five generations. METHODS The national identification numbers of all 220 living Icelanders in Reykjavik known to have PsA were linked with the genealogy database. RRs for developing PsA were estimated in ...

Factors affecting utterance-final vowel devoicing in spontaneous Japanese

Investigation of spontaneous speech corpora has shown that vowel devoicing in Japanese is a statistical phenomena. However, factors behind vowel devoicing have not been fully studied. In addition, there have been no studies that specifically examined pre-pausal vowel devoicing. In this paper, we investigate vowel devoicing in the pre-pausal position, in particular, vowel devoicing occurring at ...

The timing of nuclear and prenuclear Icelandic pitch accents

Two experiments were designed to test F0 alignment in Icelandic pitch accents with a view to establishing distinct intonational categories. Four conditions were tested: (i) prenuclear accents; (ii) final nuclear accents in broad focus sentences; (iii) final narrow focus; (iv) non-final narrow focus. The results are such that (i) prenuclear accents are signaled by a late rise (L*H), final nuclea...
